The Climate-Shield™ Rain Screen Wood
Siding System made its US Greenbuild debut in San Francisco and was extremely well received by architects, design professionals, green builders and construction professionals of all types. The Greenbuild Expo was once again a crucible of cutting edge building products and sustainable design technology and was a very well attended and successful show for attendees and exhibitors alike. It seems that there are significantly more people at this electrifying event every year and the excitement created by the Climate-Shield Rain Screen System was no exception to the passion of these green building and design professionals.
Architects and design professionals were enamored by the sustainable design concepts of the unique Climate-Shield Rain Screen System. One architect described the Climate-Shield System as "an elegant solution" to rain screen design and admired it for its simplicity and design flexibility. In addition to its ability to easily create horizontal, vertical and diagonal rainscreen designs, the Climate-Shield Rain Screen System can use a wide variety of sustainable wood siding materials. Among the most well received of the rainscreen wood siding options were; FSC Santa Maria hardwood, Ipe siding, Machiche wood siding and Garapa hardwood. All of these wood siding species are sustainably harvested hardwoods that ensure long term durability for the entire rainscreen system.
Green builders and construction professionals were captivated with the simplicity and ease of installation of the Climate-Shield Rain Screen System. Several builders who have previously installed rain screen wood siding using furring strips were impressed with the time
savings and labor cost savings of the Climate-Shield System. Since the Climate-Shield Rain Screen Clip eliminates the need for any furring strips, and can be placed anywhere on the exterior structural sheathing, there are significant material savings as well. A rain screen clip can be placed at the end of each piece of wood siding, eliminating the need to cut off the end of the siding board to land on a furring strip.
With the Climate-Shield Rain Screen Wood Siding System, additional cost savings can be achieved by eliminating wood siding waste. By using all of the random length wood siding boards in a typical siding tally, material savings of 2.5% to 3% of the total cost of the siding are typical using the Climate-Shield Rain Screen Wood Siding System. On larger rain screen projects savings of $1,000 or more are not uncommon for Climate-Shield Rain Screen installations. This is not only good environmental stewardship; it makes good business sense, too.

The Greenbuild Expo in Toronto was an energizing and exciting event. If you were there, then you know first hand how big the show was and how many interesting new products were displayed. If you missed Greenbuild, please allow me to fill you in on a few highlights. Members of the design and construction communities were out in force and were well represented by their colleagues. Over 1,000 suppliers exhibited the latest sustainable products and technology on the market.
While we received a lot of interest in our Climate-Shield Rain Screen Wood Siding system, one of the hardwood species that drew a surprisingly high amount of attention (in our opinion) at the Greenbuild Expo was Cumaru decking and Cumaru rain screen siding. We thought that more design and construction professionals were aware of the advantages that Cumaru lumber and Cumaru decking offer the design community. The Greenbuild Expo served as an excellent starting point to get the good news out about Cumaru hardwood.
Architects and design professionals were intrigued by the extremely high density and strength
characteristics of Cumaru hardwood lumber. Cumaru decking and Cumaru lumber are nearly as hard and strong as Ipe decking and Ipe lumber. Cumaru decking, Cumaru siding and Cumaru lumber actually exhibit a slightly higher density than Ipe hardwood.
Green builders were excited about the reddish brown coloration and exotic graining appearance of Cumaru decking and Cumaru rain screen siding. Both design and green construction professionals were also impressed with the affordability of Cumaru decking, Cumaru siding and Cumaru lumber. While Cumaru decking and Cumaru siding have many characteristics similar to Ipe decking and ipe siding, one area where Cumaru is the clear cut winner is the initial pricing. Cumaru decking and Cumaru siding are available with FSC Certification and other sustainable methods.
