Inside and out, this sparkling renovation redefines coastal warmth and understated elegance. Shannon Baird of SBaird Design helped to guide this project from inception through fruition. Together with custom builder Tod Phillips of Wood Specialty Construction, they completed an extensive remodel of a beachfront home in Manzanita Oregon that had been sadly neglected over several decades.

According to Houzz.com, “A whole house remodel transformed this dwelling into a modern and serene beach retreat".  While restoring and enhancing this home, many unique design features were built into this renovation, including a durable vertical wood rain screen system on the outside and high performance hardwood decking.  Due to its solid reputation for long-lasting durability and timeless beauty, Ipe hardwood was selected for both the siding and decking of this seaside gem of a home.

On the outside of the structure, resistance to extreme weather is of paramount importance to creating long-lasting designs that can withstand the elements. For this reason and more, the Climate-Shield Rain Screen System, with its marine grade aluminum components, was chosen to complete this sustainable façade. The Climate-Shield system is widely recognized by architects, designers and construction professionals alike for its functionality and design simplicity, even with a vertical wood rainscreen. Builders especially appreciate the ease of installation and the labor savings. According to Tod, “I really liked working with your system.”

Coastal homes are particularly exposed and vulnerable to the impact of storms and harsh weather. The ¾” wall cavity and back ventilation of the Climate-Shield® system allows for such eventualities and is, in fact, designed to withstand hurricane force winds in excess of 200 miles per hour. Mr. Phillips believes that this home is so well designed and built that it will outlast and outperform other homes in the same area. Although no one wants to see a large storm hit, this is a great testimonial to the durability, strength and longevity of the entire structure, including the rain screen system – from the sturdy, weather resistant Climate-Shield fasteners to the exceptionally durable Ipe hardwood cladding and quality installation.

Because Tod is an experienced and meticulous builder, numerous custom carpentry touches were incorporated into this project, including exceptional detailing around the windows and doors. A copper roof and downspouts and other architectural design features were also added. The Ipe siding was finished with a rosewood oil hardwood sealer, which is applied periodically in an extremely well kept manner to help maintain the like-new richness and coloration of the wood siding.
