Featured Product: Cumaru Decking

While you are packing away your winter coats and clothing and spring is in the air and on your mind, you may be considering a new deck, dock, porch or other outdoor retreat. A not-so-widely-known species called Cumaru (KOO'- mah- roo) is quickly and quietly becoming a favorite throughout the world. Cumaru is a member of the Mataverde® Premium Hardwood Decking family. This wonderful Brazilian beauty is a species of exotic decking as durable as it is attractive.

Cumaru's vibrant and exotic graining and rich colors vary wonderfully from piece to piece and even within individual boards creating a rich and unique character. Mataverde® Premium Cumaru is all heartwood and ranges in color from a yellowy brown to reddish and purplish brown. When left to age naturally, Cumaru turns a soft silver platinum hue very similar to Ipe. This species shows more color, striping and grain variations than Ipe and Garapa, creating an extraordinary palette of exotic beauty for your deck. Like a hardwood floor inside your home, no two pieces are alike. This rich variation reflects the inherent beauty of this all natural species.

Mataverde® Premium Cumaru is a tough, dense kiln dried wood with a pronounced coarse grain and is considerably stronger and heavier than oak. The cost is approximately 15% less than Ipe and 20% less than synthetic plastic decking.

Like all Mataverde® Premium Hardwood Decking species, Cumaru is an all natural, very dense exotic hardwood, is responsibly harvested, and is covered by a 25 Year Limited Warranty against insects and decay. Click here to learn more about this remarkable species and other decking options.

Featured Product: Garapa Decking

While your thoughts may be yearning for springtime and visions of backyard beauty and warm cloudless days sparkle in your mind’s eye, you may be considering a new deck, dock, porch or other outdoor retreat. A not-so-widely-known species called Garapa (gah-RAH-pah) may be the ticket to happiness at your homestead. Garapa is a member of the Mataverde® Premium Hardwood Decking family. This honey blonde Brazilian beauty is a species of exotic decking as durable as it is attractive.

Garapa’s delicate ribbon-like graining and rich colors vary wonderfully from piece to piece and even within individual boards creating a subtle understated warmth and unique character. Mataverde® Premium Garapa is all heartwood and ranges in color from a sun kissed yellow to golden brown which will darken slightly with age. If left natural Garapa turns a soft silvery platinum hue very similar to Ipe. While this species shows less color and grain variations than Ipe or Cumaru, there is still a beautiful assortment of exotic boards. Like a hardwood floor inside your home, no two pieces are alike. This rich variation reflects the inherent beauty of this all natural species.

Mataverde® Premium Garapa is a tough, dense wood with a soft looking satiny grain and is considerably stronger and heavier than oak. Like Mataverde® Ipe and Cumaru it is extremely resistant to shrinking, splintering, twisting, cupping and checking. Mataverde® Garapa has a high decay resistance rating throughout all fibers of the wood. Mataverde® Garapa is kiln dried to minimize shrinkage and checking to provide a deck surface that is just right for you.

Like all Mataverde® Premium Hardwood Decking species, Garapa is an all natural, very dense exotic hardwood, is responsibly harvested, and is covered by a 25 Year Limited Warranty against insects and decay.

General Woodcraft Provides Decking for Replica of Historic Hotel

WATCH HILL, RHODE ISLAND— Originally built in 1868, the Ocean House remained the only standing hotel from the glory days of the Victorian era mid-way between Boston and New York. At the turn of the twentieth century the big yellow hotel became an innovative landmark physically and socially. Ocean House was the first resort hotel in the country to offer telephone service and indoor plumbing.

Despite valiant efforts to refurbish this beautiful landmark, it was considered "too deteriorated to restore." To the sincere dismay of local historians and preservationists, several large condominiums were on the verge of being built on the parcel. Just then, a local businessman, Charles M. Royce, "appeared on the scene like a white knight". Not only did he rescue the hotel, by buying it from the original owner for $11.5 million, but he also agreed to restore the Ocean House or replicate it if the building was beyond repair.
In 2006 the original Ocean House was demolished. In its footprint, a new grand hotel has been built that includes many original artifacts and furnishings that were saved from the original. True to his word, Mr. Royce’s vision is now nearly a reality.

The new luxury hotel (which also includes several units available as condominiums) is a splendid reminder of coastal New England of an era gone by. The spacious Mataverde® Ipe decks provide a stunning view of Block Island Sound and Narragansett Bay. General Woodcraft is proud to be the supplier of Mataverde® Premium Ipe for this remarkable project.

Mataverde® Premium Ipe Decking Color Range and Natural Graining Variations

The character marks and naturally distinguishing coloration and graining variegation are inherent in all wood species. Some species exhibit more character than others. Mataverde® Premium Ipe Decking is one such spectacular species.

Mataverde® Premium Ipe displays a wide range of colors, graining and all-natural grandeur. Very similar to the hardwood flooring inside your home, the inherent "figuring" and variegated appearance seen in many pieces helps create a unique work of art on your deck.

Typically there will be a full spectrum of color ranges from tan to olive brown to reddish to dark browns. The exotic graining will differentiate every piece. Like a hardwood floor, no two pieces are exactly alike.

To Oil or Not to Oil?

A wood stabilizer has been applied to these boards to minimize minor surface checking. This area will be left to weather naturally.

This open deck area has been oiled with a rosewood oil finish. This treatment enhances and darkens the rich contrasting colors and figuring of Ipe and protects the surface from UV rays.

After several seasons of natural weathering, this deck has matured into a strong durable living space of understated elegance. The rich grain figuring adds a subtle textural variation.

Ocean Beach Boardwalk–New London, CT

Over the past several years, Dave Sugrue and the staff at Ocean Beach have been quietly undertaking a beautiful renovation project: restoring the boardwalk at Ocean Beach to its former glory. With a tremendous outpouring of community support, help from the city of New London, donations, volunteers and materials supplied by General Woodcraft, all combined to help resurrect this historic waterfront treasure.

The boardwalk is over a quarter mile long and required over 150,000 linear feet (twenty eight miles) of Mataverde® Premium Ipe Hardwood Decking to complete this monumental project.
