Playland Park Gets a New Ipe Boardwalk

Written by on

Playland Park in Rye, New York was ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, along with many other coastal areas along the East Coast. With careful planning and timely execution, this project came in ahead of schedule and under budget.

The park recently re-opened after it was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy. According to New York Newsday, “repairs at the 280-acre park totaled more than $13 million. At the beginning of May, as many as 80 workers were still feverishly hammering away at repairs.”

Construction work took months as workers hurried to repair large sections of the old boardwalk that was ruined by the October storm. High density Ipe hardwood was selected for the boardwalk because it is so strong and durable with low life cycle costs. Ipe hardwood has often been used in projects that receive so much foot traffic and need to last for a long time under extreme weather and pedestrian wear and tear conditions. Using a sustainably harvested natural wood decking material adds immeasurably to the beauty of this family oriented park area.

Karl Wahlberg, of Wakefield, Rhode Island was helpful in bringing this Ipe boardwalk project to successful completion. Mataverde Ipe hardwood 2x4 decking and stainless steel deck screws were supplied seamlessly, keeping ahead of the construction crews and allowing work to progress at an uninterrupted and extremely efficient pace. Wahlberg was very excited that the Ejector stainless steel screw system was selected, because it enabled the contractor to use an exceptionally strong deck fastening screw that saved the construction team hundreds of hours of labor.
