The Coney Island Boardwalk is an enduring national treasure that has hosted generations of visitors since the 1920's. Every year this historic seaside boardwalk supports millions of sightseers, cyclists and vehicular traffic such as police cars and sanitation crews. Although the Coney Island boardwalk withstood decades of harsh coastal weather, in 2009 and 2010 many areas of the Coney Island Boardwalk were in need of restoration. In addition to repairs of the substructure, worn and decayed boards were replaced with Mataverde FSC® Cumaru decking which was selected for its strength and ability to withstand the punitive coastal conditions.

Garapa dock material used in ortley beach boardwalk

In October of 2012, Super Storm Sandy hit most of the eastern seaboard with its ferocity and fury. Very few areas experienced greater devastation than the New Jersey coastline - over 346,000 homes were destroyed. Repairs, rebuilds and cleanups along the Jersey Shore continued for several years and communities worked tirelessly to restore not only their business and homes, but their treasured beachfront and boardwalks, as well. In one such community, Ortley Beach,  they chose Garapa hardwood decking to rebuild their beloved boardwalk. With a limited budget,  Garapa struck a good balance that offered the required performance and durability of natural hardwood decking at a reasonable cost that met their budget.

In 1928, Playland Park was created for its local residents in Rye, NY. Situated on 280-acres, the Art Deco delight features magnificent buildings, an extensive network of paths, recreation areas and a quarter-mile boardwalk overlooking the Long Island Sound. Like many other coastal areas along the East Coast, Playland Park in Rye, New York was ravaged by Hurricane/Super Storm Sandy in 2012. The large sections of boardwalk destroyed by the storm were replaced with high density Ipe hardwood.  Ipe hardwood is one of the best decking materials when a project must endure extensive foot traffic and/or extreme weather conditions thanks to its durability and low life cycle costs.
