Stunning Ipe Hardwood Rain Screen Design in Cambridge, MA

Written by on

Yes, they’ve done it again. Anmahian Winton Architects in Cambridge, MA recently completed another stunning residential home design in this lovely city neighborhood. Two different sizes of Ipe hardwood siding were incorporated into the rain screen design. Together, they create a striking linear effect. Vertical Ipe wood outside corners were used to create a visual break between the various façades of the building. The project is a wonderful example of the use of complementary design elements and harmonious contrasts to create an understated elegance.

We love their use of the various colors, textures and contrasts on this design.  The eye-catching linear effect of the hardwood siding stands in contrast to the lush vegetation and plantings. The subtle gray color tone of the semi-transparent sealer on the Ipe hardwood rain screen siding serves multiple purposes. First, it provides an instant ‘weathered look’ appearance to create a subdued softness to the design. It also helps this modern architectural style blend seamlessly into a neighborhood of more traditional colonial style homes.

Because of its natural looks and notable longevity and performance, Ipe hardwood siding was selected for this design. Anmahian Winton has also incorporated Ipe siding with the Climate-Shield Rain Screen System into other award winning residential designs. A well-designed rain screen system can help create a highly sustainable, healthy interior and high-performance exterior in architectural designs. And let’s face it, they look beautiful.

The great looks of hardwood siding were combined with the high performance of hardwood siding. The health benefits and low life-cycle costs of a rain screen system are becoming more well known. It is no surprise that this trend has taken firm root in modern architecture and sustainable design. Natural wood siding creates an unmistakable warmth and embracing appeal for the exterior façade of a structure. The rain screen system itself is invisible behind the cladding yet is the driving force for health benefits, low life cycle costs and energy savings.
