Build Fearlessly: Comprehensive Guide to Fire-Resistant Saferwood Decking

Builders and Architects know the demand for the warmth and eco-friendliness of wood is in a tug-of-war with the mandates for fire-rated materials. Until recently, choosing fire-resistant siding and decking meant being limited to plastic or fiber cement. But as environmental risks have evolved, so has the technology of fire-retardant treated wood.

The Building Need for Fire-Resistant Building Solutions

The idea of home hardening isn’t just a West Coast conversation now; it is a national priority. As wildfire risks increase and Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) maps expand into residential areas, homeowners, architects, and designers are looking for ways to protect investments without sacrificing the soul of their design.

In our recent case study involving a tiny home built near a WUI area, the homeowner, Caroline Campbell, a documentary director who has focused on wildlife and the planet, realized the urgency. "I knew that those maps are changing... [this area of California] has had huge fires in recent years and it’s going to have more."

The solution was Mataverde SaferWood®. By choosing this material for the deck and siding of her home, the goal was clear: "This is going to protect the house from flying embers; it’s going to give that defensible space.” She continues, “and then when the material arrived …it’s just gorgeous looking material.”

Aesthetic Advantage of Real Wood vs. Composites

When choosing between SaferWood and PVC or fiber cement for siding and decking, the decision usually depends on whether you value the authentic look and feel of premium natural wood.

  • Natural Beauty: Caroline noted, "I ordered in some of the other [product samples] which are PVC composites and instantly it just doesn't feel like real wood, it doesn't look like real wood." SaferWood maintains the gorgeous look and feel of a natural material that PVC cannot replicate.

  • Structural Integrity: Beyond the surface, SaferWood dimensional lumber provides the structural strength of Douglas Fir combined with high-performance fire and termite resistance.

"When I made the decision to go with Mataverde SaferWood …the decision was ok, this is going to protect the house from flying embers; it’s going to give that defensible space.

And then when the material arrived and they started building .. I was like, oh, I really like this…it’s just gorgeous looking material.”

Peace of Mind for Builders & Homeowners

The ultimate goal of any home hardening project is the ability to build and live without anxiety.

The Takeaway: SaferWood allows builders, architects and homeowners to build fearlessly by combining high-end aesthetics with essential fire protection. As Perry stated, it “meets the aesthetic values they're trying to achieve and meets or exceeds the fire codes."

The Solid Science of SaferWood: Thermex-FR® Technology

The magic of SaferWood isn’t a surface-level spray; it’s a molecule-deep transformation using Thermex-FR® technology. This gives both lasting peace of mind and confidence in your choice.

Molecular Level Bonding: The fire retardant is pressure-treated into the wood and kiln-bonded.

Permanent Protection: Because it is polymerized into the fibers, it remains effective for the entire service life of the wood. "It will be in effect in the wood for as long as the wood is in use, so it cannot weather out - it’s permanent, “ explains Perry D’Alibrio, Mataverde Western Regional Sales Manager

Self-Extinguishing Properties: Perry added, “The only thing that brings the retardant out of the wood is when it's exposed to flame. That will trigger the [reaction] and the retardant will extinguish the flame."

Proven in Rigorous Testing & Certification

SaferWood is backed by the Western Fire Center, Inc. (WFCI) accredited third-party testing facility and fire protection engineering experts like Dr. Vytenis Babrauskas, PhD, who states this material is "engineered for reducing ignition potential, slowing fire growth, and improving structural survivability during wildfires." (@The Palisades Fire of Los Angeles: Lessons To Be Learned)

It has also been subjected to the following tests:

Accelerated Weatherization: SaferWood passed tests simulating 600 inches of rain and 150-degree temperatures followed by a burn test where the material cannot burn past 10 feet during 30 minutes of flame exposure.

10-Year Natural Weatherization: In real-world exposure tests across various climates, said Perry, Mataverde SaferWood with Thermex is "the only fire retardant that made it after each year and also at the 10-year mark was the SaferWood."

For families, the chemistry of building materials matters just as much as the fire rating.

Non-Toxic Chemistry: The Thermex treatment uses organic compounds that are non-toxic to people, animals and the environment. This wood can even be safely recycled.

Indoor/Outdoor Approved: There is no off-gassing and no toxic residue, and it can be used for interiors or exteriors without concern. Making it safe for bare feet and children. "[My 7-year-old] is going to be running around on the deck and constantly touching it... so if it’s rated for [indoor/outdoor] then that’s good for me."

Reduced Smoke Toxicity: While plastic-infused composites emit toxic gas when burned, SaferWood’s smoke production is greatly reduced providing a safer environment during an emergency.

The decision to specify and build with wood is a smart choice for natural beauty, sustainability, and a connection to the environment. For too long, that choice felt restricted by the increasing necessity for fire safety. Mataverde SaferWood® has effectively ended that compromise.

Safe vs and Stunning

By combining the structural integrity and refined aesthetics of beautiful North American wood species with the permanent, molecular protection of Thermex-FR® technology, you no longer have to choose between safe versus stunning. Whether you are building in a high-risk WUI zone or simply looking for a non-toxic, sustainable solution for your family’s outdoor living space, Mataverde provides an aesthetic-forward, science-backed path forward.

Build with the peace of mind that your home is hardened against the elements, protected by a permanent fire retardant, and wrapped in the unmatched elegance of real wood.
