What is Santa Maria hardwood?
Santa Maria is a medium-high density hardwood with rich and beautiful coloration and graining. Santa Maria grows naturally throughout areas of South and Central America. Santa Maria (Calophyllum brasiliense) is also known as Jacareuba and Bella Maria and is a 100% Pure FSC Certified hardwood decking material.
Santa Maria decking is sustainably harvested and is a durable choice as a porch flooring and decking material option. Santa Maria decking is an affordably priced FSC decking material. Santa Maria decking also has many appealing characteristics that are similar genuine Mahogany.
What Does Santa Maria Hardwood Decking and Porch Flooring look like?
Mataverde® 100% Pure FSC Santa Maria Decking and Porch Flooring is all heartwood, and ranges in color from beige to pinkish and reddish brown colors with some slight darker veining. The medium interlocking grains create a beautiful pattern and have the rich lustrous appearance of genuine mahogany.
Mataverde® Santa Maria is only produced quartersawn. This elaborate cutting technique helps make sure that each piece of Mataverde® Santa Maria even more beautiful with rich graining and figuring. By manufacturing our Santa Maria hardwood in a quartersawn manner, each piece of wood also has increased stability as well as beauty.
Like other hardwood porch flooring, decking and siding materials, Santa Maria hardwood will eventually age to a light silvery gray patina when left to weather naturally. With a coat of rosewood oil penetrating sealer, Santa Maria decking quickly shows its rich warm reddish brown tones and coloration. Santa Maria decking is a medium grained medium-high density hardwood and looks absolutely stunning as a siding, decking or porch flooring material.

For additional color options, Santa Maria hardwood can also be stained to a wide pallette of hues and tones to match or complement your design and color scheme.

Physical Characteristics of Mataverde® Santa Maria :
Mataverde® 100% Pure FSC Santa Maria Decking is a tough, medium-high density hardwood with a medium grain. With a slightly lower density than Garapa decking, Santa Maria decking has nearly the same hardness as White Oak.
Mataverde® 100% Pure FSC Santa Maria Decking exhibits character, striping and color variation and will turn a soft silvery patina if left to weather naturally. Kiln dried Santa Maria decking is highly resistant to shrinking, splintering, twisting, cupping and checking.
Santa Maria decking is rated as a durable wood species when used outdoors. Santa Maria is hard and fairly dense and is resistant to fungi, decay and dry wood borers. Mataverde® Santa Maria Decking is rated as moderately durable to termite attacks. For this reason, Santa Maria is not covered by the Mataverde 25 year limited warranty.
Mataverde® 100% Pure FSC Santa Maria decking, porch flooring and siding is kiln dried to approximately 14% moisture content, making it a very stable decking, siding and porch flooring material. At this moisture content Santa Maria decking has a bending strength of 15,700 psi. That means it would take 15,700 pounds of pressure per square inch to rupture Santa Maria hardwood. Santa Maria is stronger than red oak or white oak. Santa Maria decking also has a hardness of 1,150 lbs (harder than red oak and more than twice as hard as redwood).
Mataverde® 100% Pure FSC Santa Maria Decking has good dimensional stability and shows only minimal movement after manufacture. We take extra care by cutting our Santa Maria quartersawn and kiln drying our Santa Maria hardwood for increased stability. Santa Maria decking has low shrinkage and minimal checking.

How to Install Santa Maria Decking
Like other high and medium-high density hardwoods, special care should be taken when installing Santa Maria decking. Pre-drilling holes prior to screwing down the decking boards is one option. Another installation option for Santa Maria decking is to use the Ejector screw, which requires no pre-drilling of holes and provides very sturdy deck fastening. For those of you who prefer to see only the beauty of the decking itself, you may want to consider a hidden fastener such as Eb-Ty hidden deck fasteners.
