Oakland Waterfront Showcases Machiche Hardwood Decking

Written by on

When planners were considering how to revitalize 64 acres of industrial waterfront in Oakland, they had some great ideas.  Since 2001, they have been working to plan, clean up and transform this formerly restricted area and open it to the public. They developed a master plan to beautify this section of the Bay waterfront that includes housing, stores, public parks, two renovated marinas and more.

This section of land, situated along the Oakland Estuary of the San Francisco Bay, wasn’t a very welcoming area. Despite the great location, the site consisted of an industrial area that was not open to the public.  It needed some love. And a vision.

Signature Development Group has led the charge and, per their president Michael Ghielmetti, “Brooklyn Basin is the culmination of years of planning and community input and will revitalize this part of Oakland’s historic waterfront.”  About half the area, roughly 32 acres, will be used for parks and public open spaces.

The park area includes a beautiful wooden boardwalk-style deck structure, which is scheduled to open in 2020. It’s a beauty. The style is reminiscent of the Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn, New York. The design team chose a herringbone pattern for the deck design in Brooklyn Basin.

Because sustainability is such an important factor, they specified an FSC® Certified decking material. Forest Stewardship Council® certified decking ensures that all these hardwood decking materials meet the rigid sustainability criteria of this environmentally responsible organization.

And because this deck will be open to the public, the design requirements also included resistance to lots foot traffic, high-strength and high performance. FSC Machiche hardwood decking was a great solution and meets all the design criteria.

Machiche decking is highly regarded for its incredible strength, natural beauty, durability and scratch resistance. The natural beauty of Machiche hardwood decking works nicely for commercial, municipal and residential deck projects. It’s a great fit as a marine decking material for this waterfront renovation project.

According to Boris Dramov, a principal at Roma Design Group, “We’re creating a neighborhood that’s an extension of the city, juxtaposing the amenity value of the Bay with urban development and public accessibility.”  We love their vision. Roma's experience with architecture, landscape architecture and urban design has helped knit communities together before. And this project is no exception.
